Chapter1Lehi's Vision

◆ About this chapter

Chapter One of the Book of Mormon, titled 'Lehi's Vision,' serves as the foundational narrative for the Nephite record, recounting the prophet Lehi's emigration from Jerusalem and his inaugural divine encounter. This opening chapter establishes the work's central themes of prophetic revelation, divine judgment, and the necessity of spiritual preparation amidst historical turmoil. Situated at the outset of the text, it functions to introduce the theological framework that governs the subsequent history of the Nephite people and their interactions with the Lamanites.

I, Lehi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. 2Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians. 3And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto him, saying: Blessed art thou Lehi, because of the things which thou hast done; and because thou hast been faithful and declared unto this people the things which I commanded thee, behold, they seek to take away thy life. 4And it came to pass that he saw a pillar of fire, and he dwelt in it; and he saw the heavens open, and he saw God sitting upon his throne, and he saw many angels descending from heaven. The Vision of the Th… 5And he saw a book, and he took it and read; and the things which he read were filled with righteousness and truth; and he was filled with the Spirit of the Lord.
