Chapter3King Benjamin's Sermon

◆ About this chapter

Chapter 3 of the Book of Mormon, titled 'King Benjamin's Sermon,' serves as a pivotal theological centerpiece within the Nephite historical narrative. Following the deposition of his father, King Mosiah, Benjamin addresses his people from the temple steps, delivering a discourse that synthesizes themes of divine grace, covenantal obligation, and the impending incarnation of the Messiah. This section functions as a didactic bridge between the book's historical framework and its core soteriological claims, offering a structured exposition of redemption that characterizes the text's broader religious vision.

And it came to pass that he returned to his own house, and sat down upon his couch, and began to be weary, and to be filled with fear and trembling, lest he should be condemned by the Lord. 2And it came to pass that an angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him: Arise, and stand upon thy feet, and hear the words which I shall speak unto thee. 3And he said unto him: I am Mosiah, the son of Benjamin, king over this people; and I have been called to be a king over this people. 4And the angel said unto him: Behold, I am come to declare unto thee the glad tidings of great joy. 5For behold, the time is at hand, or is not far distant, when the Son of God shall come down from heaven, and shall dwell in the flesh, and shall be called Jesus Christ.
